The end of September sale held at Bourne was a fantastic end to a month of incredible sales at the Bourne saleroom.
Following only two weeks after Colin’s 40th Anniversary three-day sale, nearly 500 lots of antiques and collectables in the part one sale, and over 300 lots in the part two general sale were sold in a single day on the 24th September. With an eclectic mix of items for every collector, at every price point, it was no surprise that the viewing day on the Tuesday was jam packed with private buyers and dealers inspecting lots ready for the auction the following day.
Colin started the sale on the Wednesday with lot 1, an 18th gold pocket watch weighing 105g all in. The watch had a gold brushed floral Roman numeric face, with rubbed marks that indicated that it may have been for Sheffield 1902. The piece sold for £2500. A Mountbatten Medallic History of Great Britain and the Sea also reached four figures on sale day, selling for £3900 (lot 29). The set containing 100 silver medallions issued by John Pinches and was contained in four presentation volumes.
Enamel signs always prove popular with collectors at auction. An Oxo Cube sign bearing the slogan ‘It’s Meat and Drink to You, Concentrated Beef,’ attracted multiple bidders, the hammer fell at £400 (lot 31).
Other items of note include a silvered bronze figure of Ecstasy by the Austrian sculptor and ceramicist Josef Lorenzl made £440 (lot 34), and a Must de Cartier gold vermeil lady’s tank watch on a leather strap for £1000 (lot 381).
A fine collection of Purdey related items consigned by a former member of staff similarly attracted attention. Comprising over 20 lots, a collection of leather gun case labels realised £240, and a copy of Purdey Gun and Rifle Manufactures The Definitive History by Donald Dallas, signed by the author, the chairman, director, members of the family, and a large number of employees, made £260.
