Our Anniversary Sale on 9 September featured a private collection of Madeira wine, which attracted considerable pre-sale interest. Bidding was competitive, with enthusiasts and collectors participating from across the globe. The collection achieved a fantastic total of more than £5,500, with one particularly special bottle realising £3,200.

So, what makes this wine so special? There are several factors to consider, including its age, rarity and the fascinating history of Madeira itself. Renowned for its distinctive aroma and complex flavours, Madeira is also celebrated for its remarkable longevity. Thanks to its unique production process, it can withstand heat and, once opened, can remain enjoyable for far longer than many other wines.

What is Madeira?

Madeira is a fortified wine, traditionally strengthened with grape spirit, produced on the Portuguese island of Madeira. The island’s climate, landscape and grape varieties contribute to the wine’s distinctive character, with styles ranging from dry and delicate to rich and intensely sweet.

This particular bottle was the star of the collection, realising £3,200. Dating from 1795, it attracted attention thanks to its remarkable age, rarity and condition. Bottles of this calibre can hold considerable appeal for collectors, offering a fascinating connection to centuries of winemaking history.

Is Wine for Collecting or Drinking?

This is a question that often sparks debate! Fine wines can, of course, be purchased and enjoyed, but there is also a dedicated market for rare vintages and sought-after bottles. For collectors, factors such as provenance, condition, rarity and historical significance can all influence a wine’s desirability and value.

Whether you have a treasured bottle tucked away or an entire collection waiting to be discovered, you may be surprised by its potential auction value.
