Michael Brian Sierton (1937-2025)
Oscar winner Michael Sierton was born in Derby on 1st November 1937. In his early career he worked at a scrap metal yard but his artistic talents and interest in the performing arts eventually took him to Derby Playhouse, where he became a set designer.
Eventually he moved to work in London’s West End and there he started his friendship and collaborative work with the well-known production designer Terence Marsh (1931-2018). Michael subsequently followed Marsh to Hollywood and became immersed in the movie industry.
They worked on films together such as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, plus many others.
Michael Sierton won an Academy Award (Oscar) for his set direction on the film Gandhi (1982), directed by Lord Richard Attenborough. He was also nominated for an Oscar for his work on the film Reds (1981) directed by Warren Beatty.
Michael’s film credits are numerous and further include set direction work on Fallen, Laws of Attraction, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Diabolique, Sommersby, My Cousin Vinny, Nuns on the Run, Cry Freedom, Gorky Park and The Corn is Green.
In later life he took to writing and illustrating books.
Michael Sierton passed away in February 2025 at his home in Netherseal, South Derbyshire where he lived for many years and was a much loved and respected member of the community.

Academy rules since 1951 have prevented these prestigious awards being sold and it has remained within his family. So whilst you won't see the statuette at our saleroom the collection is going under the hammer on Wednesday 6th May 2026.
