The Bourne collective sale held on the 15th April contained an eclectic mix of items, with some impressive sale results for items of their type.
Most notably, a fine collection of tea caddy’s consigned by a private vendor featured within this sale. A caddy, from the Chinese word ‘catty’- a measurement of a pound weight of tea- was used to keep tea under lock and key. Tea had to be imported at enormous expense from the east and as such was a treasured item; you would want to put it in something equally impressive.
A fine 19thC walnut caddy modelled as a bureau generated much presale interest, with the hammer falling at £800 on saleday- if only full size 19thC bureau’s generated such figures! Two intricately decorated quill, or scroll work caddy’s, where ribbons of paper are tightly bound into coils to produce an intricate pattern, realised £360 and £550. While a painted example decorated with birds and flowers achieved £360, and a mahogany and inlaid piece decorated with Prince of Wales feathers to the lid sold for £360 on saleday.
Further notable items from this consignment included a writing chest modelled as a chest of drawers, two pairs of George III serpentine fronted knife boxes, along with a collection of 19thC envelopes bearing penny red and black stamps.
As expected, gold and silver prices were still generating impressive prices, with the highest sale price within this section being £2200 for a 9ct gold charm bracelet with a heart shaped padlock and various charms attached; arguably the most novel charm on this bracelet was a miniature Punch and Judy theatre show. An Omega 9ct white gold lady’s wristwatch sold for £725, and a George V silver teapot, with ivory license obtained as per licensing regulations, realised £650.
With a mixture of furniture from contemporary armchairs and a mangowood cabinet, to the ever popular 1970s teak sideboards, two early 18thC oak gateleg tables realised £240 and £380- curving the all common phrase ‘no one wants dark brown furniture.’
Consignments are now welcome for our forthcoming May sale. We are open Monday-Friday 9am-1pm and 2pm-5pm, excluding bank holidays, no appointment is necessary.
