White glove sale for the Shipley Cycle Collection.
The quality and diversity of the cycle collection built by the Shipley family in Scunthorpe was a phenomenal success and created a white glove sale.
For those unaware of this term it is where the auctioneer takes an entire sale and every single lot sells due to the enthusiasm of the bidders. Traditionally the auctioneer would be presented with a pair of white gloves on a silver salver by the staff.
With over 400 lots being offered from the single owner collection every lot found a home with the inevitable number of bidders online but also a room full of actively engaged bidders that has not been seen since before the Covid era of 2020.
There was palpable excitement in the room with lots of competion and bidding which often outstripped anything over the internet.
The 413 lots took 4 ¾ hours to sell with just over £70,000 under the hammer.
When put into context this collection was simply housed in the loft and garden shed of a semi detatched property.
There were many highlights in this sale but the highest price of the day was for an ordinary bicycle or penny farthing which sold for £3,000. All of the results can be viewed on our website for this sale that took place on Thursday 8th January 2026.
