Successful End to 2013 at the Bourne Saleroom

6th January 2014

At the most recent Bourne sale which took place on December 12, 2013, Principal Auctioneer and Valuer, Colin Young was said to be 'beaming' with the results. For the second month running, over 90% of lots offered for sale have found buyers.

This is an exceptional figure - achieved less than twelve months since merging with Golding Young & Mawer - which sets the Bourne Auction Rooms on a par with their sister salerooms at Grantham and Lincoln.

Young stated: "I was pleasantly surprised to see how quickly it was possible to bring the results and service at Bourne in line with our other salerooms. This has been made possible by the dedication of the staff at Bourne and our new saleroom manager, Alastair (McPhie-Meiklejon)."

Undoubtedly, the star section at the December sale was a collection of watches. The collection included over 20 watches of varying grades but including good names such as Rolex, Omega, Tudor and others. The highest price of the day was for Lot 21, an Audemars 18 carat gold wrist watch realising £2700. The collection realised in excess of £8000 with the majority of lots going to private buyers, presumably as Christmas gifts.

The sale started in style with Lot 1, a Citroen C1 2008 car from a deceased estate, outstripping its estimate and selling for £2950. The Bourne Auction Rooms are richly steeped in automobilia history and vehicles always do well here. Buyers tend to go that little bit further with the confidence and knowledge of the history of the vehicles, which may be overlooked in the mass of metal at a larger vehicle auction.

Elsewhere within the sale traditional antiques such as a Victorian Oak Tantalus (Lot 2) did well realizing £260. This was a great result for an item that has been out of favour with buyers for some time.

The more popular modern ceramics such as Moorcroft and jewellery showed strength throughout the sale and demand was high. Many of these markets are internet driven and online bidding was the most active since the merger.

From January 2014, the Bourne sale moves to a Wednesday. The sale dates can be found online in our online calendar.
