A 19thC Sevres circular plate, painted with putti, flanking a gilt monogram and wreath, within blue celeste and gilt vine borders, Sevres mark in blue, Chateau des Tuileries mark in iron red and double headed P under a crown enclosed by SV..46, 24cm diameter.

Provenance: Our client has prepared research notes on the background to her family's association with this 'Russian plate' and quotes as follows.
My maternal (Scottish) grandfather told me many years ago that the plate had been given to a member of my family at the time of the Czar's visit to Scotland in 1896. Having looked through some family documents and books I believe that the family member was William Walker who was a partner in a shipping firm that operated out of Leith harbour (Edinburgh) in the 19th century. As the Czar arrived at Leith harbour on 22nd September 1896 it does seem likely that my great-great uncle would have had an involvement in preparations for welcoming the Czar at that time. (Please see extra images scanned from a book written in 1899 called 'Picturesque Edinburgh') This book was presented to my grandfather's mother (maiden name Walker) in 1899 because it contained references to her father John Walker as well as her uncle, William Walker. My grandfather told me that the plate had been given by the Czar to my ancestor in return for his involvement in organising a banquet or reception in honour of the Czar's visit in 1896. I also attach a photograph taken of William ('Bill') Walker taken circa 1898.
