A Copeland cabinet plate by C F Hurten, a hand painted still life of roses, oranges and a Delft vase on an exterior stone ledge, signed, 12" dia. Charles Ferdinand Hurten 1820 - 1901 Hurten spent his early years developing his skills at the Cologne School of Art and then spent some years at Sevres. On a visit to Sevres in the early 1860s, William Taylor Copeland was so impressed that he persuaded him to leave and join Copeland at Stoke. His arrival in 1864 was without doubt one of the defining events in the history of English porcelain as the artist signed his work; up to this point nearly every major manufacturer forbade it. Slowly but most surely over the next few years these firms began to realise the value of their most talented artists but it was a few decades before it became a common practice for the artists to sign their masterpieces. It has been said that it was Hurten and Copeland who were responsible for this major move. On his arrival at Stoke, it was very quickly realised that Copeland had an artist with a most exceptional flair in his style and freedom in expressing floral subjects, and that he was probably the most talented of all in the latter part of the 19th century for his portrayal of floral subjects. This recognition was to result in Copeland receiving so many commissions for Hurten to decorate their services and vases that he worked full time until his retirement in the early 1890's. He spent three years decorating a service in excess of one hundred pieces for the Prince of Wales, and this was repeated some years later for London's Lord Mayor. £900-1200 | Nil |
