| 1244 | BILL HALEY & THE COMETS: 'Gold Disc' for (We're Gonna) ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK, on Brunswick Records No. 05317, white on black label. Provenance: This 'Gold Disc' was the property of the vendor's father, Eric I. Mosley, who worked for the Decca Record Company, New Malden, from 1946 to its demise in the 1980s. He started as the Works Chemist, with principal responsibilities for quality control and electroplating. This gold disc is almost certainly a full-scale trial of 1955/56 to ensure that the gold plating process for the final disc (of 1956) met their standards. It is therefore almost certainly the only copy, apart from the presentation disc. Significance: The contract with Bill Haley & the Comets was signed on 1st April 1954 in Decca's New York office for four records a year, with a 5% royalty, and $5,000 in advance. This completed the move from the Essex record label to the Decca record label. This version of Rock Around The Clock was recorded on April 12th in the newly kitted out Hifi Recording Studio A at the Pythian Temple. The significance of this gold record is difficult to over-emphasise. It was the first rock & roll recording that achieved Gold status, and heralded the true rock & roll era. It is specifically mentioned as a definitive influence by such artists as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Rock Around The Clock has now been recorded by more than 200 artists worldwide and the record is cited on internet sites as being one of the 20th century's true musical quantum leaps forward. ESTIMATE: No estimate is offered on this lot as there is little by way of comparable evidence to offer a sensible guide. The only comment we can offer is that we would expect it to realise a3thousands rather than a3hundreds. | Nil |
