At the recent Lincoln Fine Art auction top price went to an oil on canvas by Robert C. Taylor, titled Into Attack – Hurricane climbs out of Tangmere depicting the Mark I Hurricane UF-N.

Robert C. Taylor was born in 1946 and as an artist has specialised in maritime and aviation painting, he has exhibited throughout the world.

The picture on offer at the Lincoln auction took its influence from the importance of the Hurricane aircraft during the Second World War and the RAF base at Tangmere in Chichester.  The base closed in 1970.  The Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is located on part of the old RAF site.

Bidding quickly passed the pre-sale estimate, finally ending with a successful telephone bid of £2,800.

Gilbert Spencer was born on the 4th August 1892 at Cookham in Berkshire.  Younger brother to the artist Sir Stanley Spencer, he went on to study at Camberwell School of Arts and at The Slade School.  Gilbert Spencer was Head of Painting at Glasgow School of Art 1948-1950, and was elected to The Royal Academy in 1960.

An extensive country landscape, oil on board, caught the bidders’ eye.  The picture benefitted from having a Fine Art Society label, a premier gallery established in London and Edinburgh in 1876.  The picture went on to double its pre-auction estimate, selling for £1,300.

A distinctive work by Daisy Bowman (b.1948) from 2007, titled Hold On, with its Certificate of Authenticity sold to an internet bidder for £500.

Daisy Bowman is a Belgian artist and sculptor with works represented in galleries across the world.

The final part of the auction was dedicated to the Boston Lincolnshire artist, Mariota Bosanquet.

Born in 1923, she studied at The St. Martins School of Art from 1945 to 1948.

During her career she exhibited at Whitechapel Suffolk, Leicester and Piccadilly Galleries as well as The Lincoln Usher Gallery in 1991.

Following her death in 2022, the contents of her Windsor Bank studio were offered in over 60 lots, selling for over £4,200.
